GW Launcher

Encryption & Passwords

GW Launcher stores your accounts in Accounts.json. You choose whether that file is encrypted behind a master password or saved as plain text. New installs start unencrypted — set a master password whenever you want the protection.

Setting or changing the master password

Encryption is controlled by a single field in Settings:

SettingsGeneralMaster password

Type a password and press Apply. The field is pre-filled with the current password (if any), so you can see and change it at any time.

  • Setting a password re-saves Accounts.json encrypted, straight away.
  • Clearing the field and pressing Apply re-saves the file as plain JSON.

Changes apply immediately — there’s no restart required.

How it works

  • GW Launcher detects whether Accounts.json is encrypted by reading the file itself, so it only asks for a password when one is actually needed. You can drop in any Accounts.json and the launcher does the right thing — no setting to keep in sync.
  • When the file is encrypted, you’re asked for your master password on launch; it unlocks the stored logins for that session.
  • The password is not recoverable. If you forget it, you can’t decrypt the file — delete Accounts.json and re-add your accounts.

Encryption protects the file at rest on your disk. Your actual Guild Wars password is still sent to the game to log in, exactly as if you typed it.
